Craigmillar Castle Park Playground

{Edinburgh} Craigmillar Castle Park Playground

We’ve been meaning to check out Craigmillar Castle Park for a while. It’s right next to Craigmillar Castle, but when we visited the castle we didn’t know about the playground so we’ve been waiting for a good opportunity to take another day trip over to that side of town. When my sister and niece came to visit us in the February half term holidays and wanted to visit a Scottish castle, it was the perfect opportunity to kill two birds with one stone.

Craigmillar Castle Park Playground

Craigmillar Castle Park playground is different from any other playgrounds we have visited in Edinburgh, and that alone makes it worth a trip out there just for the playground alone. The playground is made entirely out of ropes, save for two slides. There are three large rope pyramids/climbing frames in the corners of the playground, which are connected by a maze of rope nets, rope ladders, rope bridges, rope monkey bars, rope hammocks and more. If you have a kid who loves climbing, this is definitely the place to take them!

There’s not much else to say about the playground really, other than my boys had a fantastic time and didn’t want to leave.

Craigmillar Castle Park Playground

Situated within Craigmillar Castle with its woods and fields, it’s the perfect destination for a day out. There are picnic tables at the playground itself, and fairy doors to be discovered in the woodlands around if you go for a woodland walk. And of course, there’s nearby Craigmillar Castle to combine with a day trip too.

There’s no shops nearby, so be sure to bring a picnic, and the only other downside is that there are no public toilets nearby either but if you do visit the castle then that does have toilets.

Both the park and the castle are just a 10-15 minute walk away from the nearest bus route, so it’s also not that difficult an outing to do via public transport.
