Handmade Floral Midsummer Crowns

The Summer Solstice and Midsummer are just around the corner. Last year we made our own floral Midsummer Crowns to celebrate. It’s really easy – all you need is wire and some foliage. You’ll also need something to cut the wire and the foliage with.

We used eucalyptus leaves and some small white flowers (I didn’t catch the name) which we got from a local florist, but you could use any foliage or flowers – small leaves and petals work best, if you don’t want your head to be swamped.

Step 1 – Make a ring out of wire to fit loosely around your (or your child’s head).  Wind it around a couple of times for strength. Make sure there are no sharp wire ends pointing inwards as you don’t want them poking in to your head!

Step 2 – Cut a dozen or so short pieces of wire, about 3cm to 5cm long.

Step 3 – Cut small lengths of foliage, and wrap them around the ring using the short wire pieces to twist around the stems and keep the foliage in place. Again, make sure you don’t have any sharp wire ends facing inwards that might end up poking you in the head.

Step 4 – Here’s a close up of the crown partially done. Now just work your way around the ring, with your next piece of foliage overlapping the stems of the previous pieces, until you get all the way round.

Step 5 – When you you get all the way round, just tuck the last few stems under the pieces of foliage you started with. And voila! Your very own floral Midsummer crown. Now make crowns for everyone!
