Free Printables: Jubilee Cake Toppers

The countdown to Queen Elizabeth II’s – a.k.a. THE Queen – Platinum Jubilee is on. Ten years ago we were in Berlin, celebrating the Diamond Jubilee big style, inviting friends and colleagues round for a very British afternoon, with cucumber sandwiches, scones with clotted cream, jubilee cocktails, and red, white and blue decorations all over the house. This year, it looks to be a bit more of a quiet affair. As you can maybe imagine, Scotland isn’t as crazy about plastering Union flags everywhere as our neighbours to the south are. But still we love an excuse for a party, so we’ll be digging out the old bunting, and having a wee jubilee picnic in the garden. If you ask my kids, the number one thing you need for a good party is cake, and I’ve got the perfect cake decorations for the occasion.

My husband created these cake toppers for me ten years ago, for our Diamond Jubilee party, and after it looked like the files were lost I managed to dig up a backup copy from an old external hard drive today! You can print off a copy at the end of this post, to make some toppers for your own Jubilee party. Here’s how to do it…

You will need:

  • the printed off cake topper template
  • toothpicks (you’ll need 7 to make a full set of toppers)
  • scissors
  • sticky tape
  • glue

For an easy (a.k.a. lazy) one-sided version, you just need to print off one copy of the template, either front or back, it doesn’t matter which. To make the advanced (a.k.a. fancy) doible-sided, you’ll need to print off one each of the front and back templates.

Step 1: Print off and cut out the templates. For the double-sided toppers, you should have two ‘halves’ per topper, with the images being mirrored versions of each other.

Step 2: Fix a toothpick on to the back of one half of each image with some sticky tape…

Step 3: …then glue the matching half on top. If the front and back halves don’t quite match up, you can trim around the edges a little with your scissors to even them out.

For the easy version, you just skip the part where you glue the matching image to the back. Less cutting and no glueing. The double-sided toppers look nicer if people are going to be seeing them from both sides, but you also need to be more accurate when you are cutting out so that the two sides match. If you’re getting the kids involved in cutting out and assembling the toppers, I’d recommend going for the simpler option.
