Favourite Books About the Mail

Friday 5 - youve got mail

Following on from my post about the mini post office we made for our eldest’s fifth birthday, I’m sharing some of our favourite picture books about delivering and receiving mail with you, in this week’s Friday 5!

  • The Jolly Postman, by Janet & Allan Ahlberg – In this very special interactive book full of little envelopes to open, you get the chance to take a peak in to ‘Other People’s Letter’ – the subtitle of the book – as you follow the Jolly Postman on his round to deliver the post to some well known fairy tale characters, such as Goldilocks, Cinderella, or the Big Bad Wolf.
  • A Letter for Tiger, by Janosch – The original book is called ‘Post für den Tiger’, and is part of one of Germany’s most beloved children’s books series about Tiger and his friend Bear. It was one of my favourite books as a kid and my dad and I used to play at being Tiger and Bear, with “Post für den Tiiiger!” ringing throughout the house. I’m so glad this book has been translated, so that I am able to recommend it to you.
  • Katie Morag Delivers the Mail, by Mairi Hedderwick  From Germany, to one of Scotland’s most beloved children’s books series, which follows Katie Morag’s adventures on the Island of Struay. In this book, Katie Morag is asked to help deliver the mail and gets herself in to a terrible muddle. Will she be able to sort it out without getting in to too much trouble?
  • Postman Bear, by Julia Donaldson & Axel Scheffler – Part of the ‘Tales from Acorn Wood Series’, this story follows bear as he writes and delivers some letters. Kids can lift the flap to find out who receives the letters, and what the surprise is at the end. This is available as a board book, and is perfect for little ones – our 2 year old loves it!
  • Herr Lotti findet ein Paket, by Martin Gülich & Amelie Jackowski – And, finally, another German book, unfortunately not yet translated as far as I can tell, but I loved this so much I had to include it. The illustrations are lovely, and the story of Mr Lotti the postman, who finds a mysterious abandoned parcel, is very endearing. It’s a fimr favourite, discovered by chance on our boy’s birthday, just hours after we had given him his birthday present: his very own post office! Obviously, this book was meant to be!

I love this. There is still something really quite magical about a postbox and real mail! We also have the Christmas edition of the Jolly Postman which is brilliant. :)

Great suggestions! My (Scottish) mum gave Katie Morag books to her Granddaughter (my niece) for Christmas this year and they were a big hit!
