Our Wedding Part 4: Style Notes

Thank you for all your nice messages and good wishes on our anniversary yesterday. We celebrated with a sushi take out and champagne! I’ve had a couple of people asking if I’m just going to be teasing you with pictures of our muffins and party decorations, or whether you’ll get to see some photographs of us too. Well, you’re in luck, as the husband has consented to me showing a couple of our favourites.

Our church service was really special. We wrote the whole order of service ourselves, piecing together English and German traditions, scriptures and songs. Friends and family members did the readings, and a friend of mine who also happened to be the church organist agreed to do the music as his gift to us. And as the most special thing of all, my dad took the service and officiated the wedding ceremony. Everyone was asking who would give me away if he was taking the service, but you know what, he walked me down the aisle, turned round at the front, and greeted the congregation. How special is that? And not every bride gets to kiss the pastor at the end, so this is one of my favourite pictures.

One of my favourite moments of the day was right at the end of the service. Everyone, including my brand new husband, was expecting an organ recital for us to leave the church to. Instead, They Might Be Giants’ “Birdhouse In Your Soul” blasted out through the loudspeakers. It’s the husband’s most favourite band in the world ever, and it’s the hardest surprise I’ve ever had to keep. But it was so worth it. I wish I could have captured the look on his face. Only my dad, the organist, and my brother who helped me do the soundcheck knew. Here’s another favourite picture, of us leaving the church and the husband is still smiling about it.

Out of the three, this is possibly my most favourite picture. There we were, being all ceremonial and dignified – or as much as you can be with “Birdhouse In Your Soul” blasting out behind you – and then we thought, what the heck, we just got married, we gotta high five this thing!

I just wanted to show you my flowers more closely too. We didn’t want to spend an exorbitant amount of money on flowers. For the church, we just got two nice regular bouquets from a flower shop to go up front and then left them there for the Sunday service the next day. For my bridal bouquet, I was going to get some roses from a flower shop and wrap a pretty ribbon around them. I really wasn’t that fussed about wedding flowers (if you remember from Monday, we had spider plants as table decorations at our reception^^). But one of my best friends from work used to be a florist before she started out in museums, and she asked if she could do my flowers. So we took a trip to a wholesale flower market, where I chose cream coloured roses and snowberries with green foliage, and she made this wonderful bouquet for me, as well as two smaller ones for the bridesmaids.

The husband took care of the buttonholes for himself, his best man and best woman. We did not talk at all about flowers. Each of us was going to choose what we liked best and surprise each other. And do you know what he chose? Cream coloured roses! Obviously, we were meant to be.

This is the last of my favourite pictures of the two of us to share with you. Here we are walking down the side of the church to the back garden, for a wee toast with everyone who was at the service. I think my mum was a bis disappointed at first that I was marrying a Scotsman and he wouldn’t be wearing a kilt, but doesn’t he just look dashing in his three-piece suit and top hat! My wedding dress was actually a debutante ball gown from Debenham’s. I had an idea in my head of what I wanted, did an online search and ordered it. Yes, that’s right, I shunned wedding gown shopping and ordered almost the first one I found online. It was too big. I ordered the same dress a size smaller. Perfect fit! I just had it shortened a couple of inches, because I wanted something knee length, but the fitting for that took less than an hour. Least stressful clothes shopping I have ever done.

And finally for the outfits, here’s my bridal hair do. It’s one of the few things we paid someone to do professionally – the other being a photographer – as I am completely inept in getting my thin lanky hair to do anything special. Keeping in with the garden theme, I chose to add a giant butterfly. The fur collar is from a wee shrug I’d bought in case it got cold, but we were actually sweltering in an Indian summer so this photograph is the only time I wore it.
