5 Fun Books About Yetis

Friday Five Yetis

Earlier this week, we had really mild weather in Edinburgh, and I thought maybe Spring was on its way. But then the temperature dropped again. So I’m giving one last ‘high five’ to Winter, with a round-up of our favourite yeti books! There’s also a little surprise for you in this week’s round up – read through to the end to find out what it is! But back to the books, clockwise starting from the top:

  • Betty and the Yeti, by Ella Burfoot – This is a fun little story, with quirky illustrations, that I picked up in a charity shop. Betty is out sledging in the snow, when she finds some gloves. Then a fluffy hat, some hairy snow boots, a wooly scarf and a smelly coat. But who do they belong to? Not the polar bear, or the whale, or the arctic hare. Finally, she finds the owner of the clothes – it’s a shy and rather lonely yeti, who doesn’t have any friends because everyone is scared of him. Will Betty and the Yeti become friends? We love this book because of it’s nice humour and flowing rhymes, and it’s also a great opportunity to put on lots of funny voices for all the different characters.
  • Don’t wake the Yeti, by Claire Freedman (author) & Claudia Ranucci (illustrator) – If you find a sleeping yeti under your bed, don’t panic! First, check it’s not something else, like your polar bear slippers. Once you’ve confirmed it’s definitely a yeti, and not the cat, still don’t panic! If you insist on poking him awake, then you’ll learn how to take care of him – how to feed him, how to clean him. But beware of taking him shopping, and watch out for those fleas! A monstrously good story, with a funny twist at the end.
  • Yeti and the Bird, by Nadia Shireen – This story is a little bit sad, but beautiful. Yeti lives all alone, deep in the forest, and he is very lonely because everyone is scared of him (which seems to be an emerging theme where yetis are concerned). Until a little bird, who has gotten lost on her way South, crash lands in the forest. Yeti looks after the bird and they become friends. At last Yeti is happy. But then the day comes, when he needs to let his new friend fly away because it’s getting too cold for her. So he helps her get ready for her journey and find her way. A sad but beautiful story that shows sometimes friendship is about making sacrifices and letting go. But fear not, there is a happy ending for Yeti after all.
  • Henry and the Yeti, by Russell Ayto – Henry loves yetis! Everyone keeps telling him they don’t exist, but Henry is determined to track one down. Everyone laughs at him when he sets off on a Yeti finding expedition, but lo and behold, Henry is successful! But he loses his camera on the way home, so no one will believe him. No camera, no evidence. What will Henry do now? I love this book because it has a slightly different angle on the whole ‘yetis are scary’ thing. And, of course, my boys now want to go on a yeti finding expedition too!
  • Yeti Pleki Plek, by Eva Susso (author) & Benjamin Chaud (illustrator) – And, finally, a book we’ve owned for a couple of years that’s one of our favourite Winter books. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to be available in English – it was originally published in Swedish, and there seem to be German, French and Polish translations available. But we love this book so much I wanted to share it with you anyway. It features two brothers, who go out to play in the snow and meet a yeti. He runs off with them, and takes them back to his cave for some supper and to meet grandfather yeti. Will the boys’ father ever believe them when they till him about their adventure?

But wait a minute, what about the surprise I promised you at the beginning of this post? Well, the exciting news is that The Bear & The Fox is now on YouTube, on my newly rebranded YouTube channel! You can find a video of this week’s book round-up, where I talk you through this week’s recommendations and give a bit more insight in to each book! Check it out here >> YouTube Book Round-up: Yetis
