Say Hello! Bookbug Week 2024

We have a fabulous early years programme here in Scotland called Bookbug, run by the Scottish Book Trust, which supports families to read, sing, and play with their little ones – with book bags gifted to children between birth and P1, free story and rhyme time sessions in libraries and other venues across Scotland, and a website bursting with resources for families to try at home.

This week (13 – 19 May) is Bookbug Week, an annual week with special events all around Bookbug, and the theme this year is Bookbug says hello, celebrating all the different languages spoken by families across Scotland.

There are too many weekly Bookbug sessions across Edinburgh to list them all (though you can find more info on the City of Edinburgh website), but since this year’s theme is all about langauges, I thought I would do a wee round-up of the libraries that have Bookbug sessions in languages other than English.

Gaelic

  • Central Children’s Library, first Wednesday of the month 1pm – 1:30pm (during term time). Booking required.
  • McDonald Road Library, fortnightly on Wednesdays 11am – 11:30am (during term time). Booking required.

Spanish

Greek

Special mention also goes to Morningside Library, who have a monthly Greek story time (not actually a Bookbug), usually on the last Friday of the month at 10:30am – 11am. Booking required.

German

Finally, Newington Library are doing a special one-off German Bookbug, in celebration of Bookbug Week, on Thursday 16 May 2024, 10:30am – 11am. No booking required. They occasionally do German Bookbugs at other times of the year too, if you follow Newington Library on Facebook you’ll catch any announcements.
