5 Great Picture Books to Welcome Autumn

Friday Five Autumn

With Autumn firmly on our doorstep, I thought I’d share some of our favourite seasonal pictures books for the most wonderful time of the year! Since we now have not one, but two local libraries with children’s sections nearby, we have been making a lot more use of our library membership, so you’ll be finding a lot more library book finds popping up in my book round-ups. But without further ado, here are out Autumn picks. Clockwise starting from the top:

  • Pumpkin Soup, by Helen Cooper – Cat, Squirrel and Duck live together in a little cabin with a garden, and every day they cook together. Each of them has a specific task: Cat slices the pumpkin, Squirrel stirs in the water, and Duck adds in the salt. And so, day in, day out, they make the perfect pumpkin soup together. Until the day Duck wants to do the stirring. A lovely story about sharing and friendship, and the illustrations in warm autumnal colours will put you in the mood for the season ahead.
  • The Roll-Away Pumpkin, by Junia Wonders (author) & Daniela Volpari (illustrator) – Why only have one pumpkin story for Autumn when you can have two! The story starts with Marla Little running down a hill, chasing after her giant runaway pumpkin. Marla chases her pumpkin all over town, and gets some help along the way from the farmer, the baker, the milkman, and a host of other characters. What happens to the pumpkin in the end? Will Marla and her helpers ever catch it? You’ll have to read it to find out. I also love the illustration style in this one.
  • Fletcher and the Falling Leaves, by Jukia Rawlinson & Tiphanie Beeke – This is the first of our Autumnal library book finds, and I was drawn to it by the fox cub on the cover. Of course. In this sweet story, the little fox is confused and worried that something is terribly wrong, because the leaves are falling off the trees. The winter comes (jumping ahead a season here) and surprises him even more. A lovely book for explaining the change of the seasons.
  • Squirrel’s Autumn Search, by Anita Loughrey (author) & Daniel Howarth (illustrator) – Another library find, with more cute little animals. In this story, Squirrel is collecting food but he has so much fun playing around in the Autumn leaves, that he forgets where he put the food. Will he find it again before his little brother eats it all? A sweet story for talking about hibernation and animals collecting food for the winter.
  • Leaf Jumpers, by Carole Gerber (author) & Leslie Evans (illustrator) – And a final one from the library, this simple rhyming book with bold illustrations in golden Autumn hues introduces children to the shapes and colours of different kind of leaves. There’s also a short additional text at the end of the book, that explains why leaved change colour.

I am not a lover of autumn (love summer WAY too much) but these are super cool. I miss the days of reading books to my kids and would have loved these!

Leaf Jumpers is illustrated by my cousin! (Well, by marriage). Look for her other book along with Carole Gerber called Spring Blossoms (on the other side of winter!).
