Review: Hexbug MoBots Fetch [AD]

It’s been a bit quiet around here recently, as I’ve been really busy with my shop in the run up Christmas, as we are approaching peak Christmas shopping season. Speaking of Christmas shopping, we have a great review for you today which you might want to consider as a gift. My boys really love robots, so they were delighted to be invited to test one of the new MoBots from Hexbug.

Hexbug Mobots Fetch

Disclosure: We were sent a free MoBots Fetch for review. All opinions are our own.

We were sent the MoBots Fetch, which is one of three robotic sidekicks alongside Mobots Ramblez and Robots MiMix. The MoBots Fetch comes with a remote control and a little basket, as well as set of instructions.

Before you use MoBots Fetch for the first time, you need to attach the third wheel – which easily pushes in to the slot on the back of Fetch – and you’re ready to go. Yes, that’s right, your robotic sidekick comes with BATTERIES INCLUDED! If you’ve every found yourself caught out with no batteries for a new toy, you’ll know what a relief this is.

MoBots Fetch comes with two modes – in regular mode, use the D-pad on remote control to make Fetch drive forwards, backwards, or rotate 360 degrees. The buttons on the top make Fetch open and close his hands. Fetch comes with a basket to carry around, but you can make him (or her?) pick up anything as wide as a soda can or as thin as a piece of paper, and weighing up to one pound.

When character mode is on, Fetch responds to the sound of clapping hands with a dance routine. All the while chattering along in robot language. As an added bonus, you can record a short message for Fetch to repeat and then use the voice changer to cycle through different voice effects. There are two buttons on the remote to help you do this. I have to confess, we had some hit-and-miss results with this, as half the time Fetch kept cutting us off even when our messages were really short. But the other half of the time it worked, and the boys thought it was hilarious. Apparently no one else has reported this problem, so maybe we were just not speaking properly in to the microphone. I suggest just playing around with it a bit, and with the length of your messages too. It’s really fun when you get it to work.

We put together a little video to show you the Mobots Fetch in action:

The final thing to point out, is that if you have more than one MoBot they can interact with each other, and there are two channels on the remote so that you don’t get your wires crossed. Since we only have one MoBot we couldn’t test this out, but it sounds great e.g. for siblings who both have MoBots to play with each other.

In summary, apart from our little hiccup with the voice recording, I have no quibbles with this toy. It arrived at the start of the week, and the boys have been playing with it every day after school and even forgot to moan about not being allowed to watch TV. It feels really robust too, and has already survived once accidental fall from the sofa (though I wouldn’t suggest you make a habit out of that). The fact it already comes with batteries, ready to go, is a real bonus, and the tactile rubber mohawk is a nice extra touch too.

Hexbug MoBots Fetch Review

MoBots Fetch comes in a selection of different colours and is available to buy from Bargain Max or other toy retailers of your choice. I think it would make a great gift for kids for Christmas and it gets a big thumbs up from my boys too.

What a super sweet robot. It looks quite easy to use, so I would imagine it would be perfect for little fingers. Love that it can voice record!
