Spider Web Cupcakes (GF)

If you are looking for some easy peasy Hallowe’en party food to make, look no further than these spider web cupcakes which will wow your guests but are simple to put together.

BAKING THE CUPCAKES

First of all, you will need to bake some chocolate cupcakes. Here’s our go-to chocolate cupcake recipe:

Ingredients

  • 125g butter
  • 135g brown sugar
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla essence
  • 100g gluten free flour
  • 1 heaped teaspoon gluten free baking powder
  • 2 heaped tablespoons cocoa powder
  • a pinch of salt
  • 25g ground almonds
  • 4-6 tablespoons milk

You will also need some icing sugar, some dark chocolate, a plastic sandwich bag and a toothpick.

Directions

  • Pre heat your oven to 180 C (fan oven 160 C).
  • Cream the butter and sugar together until pale and fluffy.
  • Beat in the eggs.
  • Stir in the vanilla extract.
  • In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, cocoa powder, and salt, then stir in the ground almonds.
  • Fold the flour mixture into the wet mixture with a large metal spoon.
  • Add 4 – 6 tablespoons of milk until the mixture drops off the back of your spoon.
  • Spoon the mixture into a 12 hole muffin tray lined with paper cases until the cases are half full.
  • Bake in the oven for about 15 minutes (check after 10) until the cupcakes are firm on top.
  • Leave to cool before icing.

DECORATING THE CUPCAKES

While your cupcakes are cooling down, melt some dark chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over a saucepan of simmering water and also leave so cool a little.

Mix icing sugar with a water until you have a thick consistency. You don’t need very much water for this! Start with a teaspoon and keep adding drop by drop. If it gets too runny, just add more icing sugar.

Slather the icing on top of the cooled cupcakes. Transfer the melted chocolate in to your sandwich bag and snip off a little bit of a corner – don’t make the hole too big! Squeeze a small blog of melted chocolate on to the middle of each cupcake, then add two thin rings around it (see photo below). Finally, before the chocolate sets, take the toothpick and draw it from the blob in the middle outwards through the two rings – repeat all the way round to create a web effect.

To make the cupcakes even more fun, I also added a spider ring to each one which I had found in a shop. When I made these for our Hallowe’en party last year the kids loved them as they could wear the rings afterwards. If you can’t find rings, you could add regular spider decorations instead, either on the cupcakes or on the plate or table around them – just make sure all your guests know they are not to eat!!

    These look really effective, I love the effect to make the spider web. I have some time off work with my daughter for half term, these would be a great treat for us to make together for Halloween.
