Bookbug Explorer Bag Reveal

In Scotland, there is a great initiative by the Scottish Book Trust called ‘Bookbug’. As well as running free song and rhyme sessions across the country – I used to take Oskar to these at our local library when he was a baby – Bookbug gifts free book bags to every child in Scotland, a total of four bags from birth to Primary 1. There’s a Baby Bag (which they get in their first year), a Toddler Bag (which they get between ages 1 and 2), an ‘Explorer Bag’ (previously ‘Pirate Bag’, for age 3), and the Primary 1 Bag. Because we were out of the country for a few years, we haven’t had all these bags for both boys, but I remember Oskar getting his Baby Bag and Toddler Bag, and now that Mr Fox has turned 3 he recently received his Explorer Bag through nursery.

Alongside a selection of books, the bags contain some other goodies too, to explore and develop a love of reading, such as CDs with songs, rhymes and stories. In our latest bookish YouTube video, Mr Fox and I reveal what’s in the latest Explorer Bag! You can watch the video here >> Bookbug Explorer Bag Reveal

If you are not lucky enough to be eligible for one of these great bags, you can still check out the books – we’ve introduced them in the video and included all the details for you to follow up – and you can find digital copies of the CDs to listen to for free on the Scottish Book Trust website >> Bookbug CDs The website also has other great resources, such as a Song and Rhyme Library, and lists of books on different themes.

So, it’s a big thank you from us to the Scottish Book Trust! We hope you enjoy our video, and please do go and check out the Bookbug resources.

This is such a great concept. We have something similar in England but we don’t get as many bags which is a shame. Love the themes!

I love these schemes that help encourage children to read – it’s such an important skill :)

We have a similar scheme in Wales. They also include bilingual (Welsh/English) books in them. They are great. My kiddies love their books.

I do love a good canvas bag, as they are great for the environment and avoid those horrid plastic ones. Even better that it is for a book reveal x

That looks like such a good idea and will give kids for sure a love for reading. Totally like that. I remember getting a little pack of books when my Baba was very small to get him started. I hope we will have something similar when he is 3 :)

Having audio copies of a book can work wonders. I have used audio books myself for sometime, especially LoTR and Hobbit books (Tolkien is vey hard to read). I then moved and tried other others audiobooks and yep, I know fully enjoy them. I am glad you were able to enjoyed Book Bug explorer experience.

    Thanks for Sharing

This is such a great scheme, I’m a bit jealous we don’t have one in our area! When Luke started Year R, he did get a free book sent home and when he was in nursery, Santa’s presents were always books. It’s so great that schemes like this exist and I hope something like this rolls out across the rest of the UK soon.
