Foxy Books for Foxy Kids

Friday 5 - Foxy Books

I’ve got another themed round of book recommendations for you this week. Following on from the previous round-up of our favourite foxy toys, comes a round-up of our favourite foxy books. It will come as no surprise that these were all gifts received for Mr Fox, and yes, Fox really is his name (well, his middle name) not just his nickname! So, clockwise starting from the top:

  • That’s not my fox…by Fiona Watt (author) & Rachel Wells (illustrator) – This title from Usborne’s popular series of touchy-feely books was one of the first books we ever received for our little foxy newborn. For those unfamiliar with the series, each page has a reason why “that’s not my fox” e.g. it’s ears are to furry or it’s back too soft, until you get to the last page. We have our own family version too, where we change to last page to also not being the right fox, and then we all hug our own Mr Fox because “that’s our fox!” Lol. It’s a book for really little ones and both boys have outgrown it, but of course we have kept it anyway.
  • Fox in Socks, by Dr. Seuss – A Dr Seuss classic, this book is apparently aimed at ages 4+ but Mr Fox (age 2) really loves listening to the silly rhymes too, all the way through to the end. In fact, I am constantly amazed how long he will sit still when it comes to reading. He’s always on the move, unless you tempt him with a good book. Or two. Or ten. For his big brother (age 6) who is in year 1 at primary school, this has also proven a great book for practicing his reading – he’s really proud of how much of it he can now read himself, and some of those rhyme are fairly tricky!
  • Fox’s Socks, by Julia Donaldson & Axel Scheffler – Another book about a fox and socks, this lift the flap story is brought to you by the much loved children’s book duo Donaldson & Sheffler. Will Fox find his socks? Read it to find out! The other books from the Acorn Wood series are pretty cute too, we also have the Postman Bear one (as previously featured in the round-up of books about the mail).
  • The Fox in the Dark, by Alison Green (author) & Deborah Allwright (illustrator) – This cute rhyming story is one I found by chance, via the Amazon ‘if you liked this, you may also like this’ recommendations. Rabbit, Duck, Mouse and Lamb are all afraid of the Fox in the dark, and huddle together at Rabbit’s house. But when Fox also comes knocking, it turns out he’s not as scary as they expected.
  • Fantastic Mr Fox, by Roald Dahl, illustrated by Quentin Blake – And, finally, I couldn’t not include this beloved classic. Although he’s still much too young for it, this was a gift for Mr Fox’s 1st birthday (which we celebrated with a ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’ party!) While he’s waiting to grow in to it, we’ve read it to his big brother, who is just starting to move on from picture books to chapter books. It’s listed as ages 7+ but we first read it to him when he was 5 1/2 and he loved it.

Do you know of any other great foxy kids books that we could add to Mr Fox’s collection? Please feel free to share your recommendations in the comments below!
