Books to Welcome Spring

Now that we have the Spring Equinox behind us, I thought it was time to share some of our favourite kids book to welcome in the new season. So, clockwise, starting from the top:

• The Very Hungry Caterpillar, by Eric Carle – A popular classic, but I just had to include it. When our elder son was born, we ended up with five or six copies of this, in two languages, because everyone wanted to gift their favourite kids book! I’m not even sure it’s set in Spring, but the much loved story of growth from caterpillar to butterfly just reminds me of this time of year.
• Brambly Hedge Spring Story, by Jill Barklem – A much loved favourite from my childhood, I always revisit the Brambly Hedge books at the start of a new season. In ‘Spring Story’, Wilfred celebrates his birthday, and the rest of the Brambly Hedge crew come together to throw him a surprise party.
• How do flowers grow? from Usborne books – Another book about growth, this time of the botanical kind. It’s non-fiction rather than a story book, but it has over 40 flaps to lift and discover and my younger son absolutely loves it! It touches on the other seasons too, but overall very much has a Spring ‘feel’ to it.
• Lustiges Bullerbü, by Astrid Lindgren (author) & Ilon Wikland (illustrator) – The ‘Bullerbü’ series is available in English under the title ‘The Children of Noisy Village’. I don’t think this particular picture book is available in Spring, but it’s a favourite from my childhood and it’s set in Spring, so I just had to include it. It’s about seven children growing up in rural Sweden, and the adventures they have throughout the year.
• Rosie Plants a Radish, by Kate Petty & Axel Scheffler – Another lift-the-flap book about growing things, though this one is a story book rather than non-fiction. Sadly, it seems to be out of print in both English and German, but if you spot it anywhere, or can get your hands on a copy through a third party seller, go for it! It follows Rosie the rabbit as she plants, grows and harvest some much loved radishes, and it even comes with radish seeds so you can plant your own afterwards.
