{DIY} Personalised Apron

13 December 2012

Here’s another DIY gift idea that I made for someone last Christmas. I wanted to make an apron, but sewing one from scratch would have taken too long, so I had the idea of buying a plain apron and personalising it with felt letters.

Here’s what you need:

  • a plain apron (I got mine from Ikea for a reasonable price)
  • scraps of felt
  • iron on tape with backing paper, e.g. Wonderweb
  • paper and pencil
  • pins
  • scissors
  • iron

Step 1: Make your letter templates by sketching the letters on to your sheet of paper and cutting them out.

Step 2: Pin the paper templates on to your felt and cut those out.

Step 3: Iron the tape on the reverse side of your letters. The way I did it was to just iron it on, and then cut the paper to fit afterwards, rather than cutting the tape first and then trying to get it to fit exactly on to the felt letters. If you do it that way, you’ll want to put an old cloth underneath as the bits of tape overlapping the letters will otherwise stick to your ironing board and ruin it.

Step 4: Carefully peel off the backing paper.

Step 5: Arrange your letters where you want them and iron them in to place. Finished!
