Mulled Wine Recipe

17 December 2011

I’ve had a request to post the recipe for our home made mulled wine. OK, so I have a confession to make – we cheated slightly at the housewarming party and used some sachets of ‘quick mulled wine’ seasoning. However, I ended up adding lots of extra stuff to it, as it just didn’t taste quite right, so I’d have been better off making my own recipe in the first place. Which is this:

Ingredients (makes about 6 mug fulls)

  • Bottle of red wine
  • Half a litre of orange juice
  • Half a litre of apple juice
  • 2 clementines
  • 1 apple
  • 2 heaped table spoons brown sugar
  • 3 cinnamon sticks
  • 2 star anis
  • half a dozen cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • pinch of nutmeg (optional)

Pour the wine and the juice into a large pot. Cut the clementines in half and stud with the cloves. Cut the apple in to slices. Add all the remaining ingredients to the pot and slowly warm up on a low to medium heat. Don’t rush it – give the wine and the juice time to infuse with the spices – and don’t let it boil!

Credit for adding the juice goes to the Anglican chaplaincy at the University of Edinburgh, who used this as a way to stretch the mulled wine and make it go further, so it’s a great recipe for parties. For a large party just double the quantities. If you’re just having a small party of gathering and don’t need to stretch it, then you could add half the amount of juice.
