{Berlin} Café Freckles

6 May 2012

I’m postponing my Sunday Sweet baking until tomorrow (which, technically, will make it a Monday Sweet), as I’m invited to dinner on Tuesday so am going to bake enough to take some along as dessert. So, today, I will instead review the most AMAZING café I discovered on Friday thanks to a friend who suggested we meet there for lunch.

Freckles opened in March of this year in Kreuzberg (Nostitztstr. 33), and its unique selling point is that all the food they serve is vegan, making it automatically vegetarian and lactose free too. But if that wasn’t enough, they also include a selection of wheat free and gluten free cakes in their mouth watering range. I was tempted by the gluten free chocolate and peanut butter cake, but in the end opted for the wheat free mandarin cheese cake, while my friend had the wheat free apple and cream cake.

But they don’t just serve cakes, they also offer a changing menu of savoury options. We had the choice between a vegan quiche (which wasn’t gluten free, so I couldn’t eat it but my friend said it was very nice), and a very tasty potato and avocado salad. They have the usual selection of café hot drinks – for which there’s also a loyalty card available – as well as a variety of organic soft drinks and lemonades.

Just as important though for a café you want to feel at home in, is not just the menu, but also the interior design and atmosphere. With its hues of greens and turquoises, Freckles seems very calming, whilst the wooden crate shelving and jam jar table settings give it a rustic charm. I definitely found it very pleasant and would gladly have hung out for longer, had I not needed to pick up the boy from nursery.

One of my big disappointments in Berlin is the lack of cafés that serve wheat and gluten free cake compared to Edinburgh, and while it’s probably better for my waist line, sometimes you just don’t want a piece of fruit with your coffee while everyone else is digging in to chocolate brownies. So on discovering Freckles, I kinda felt like I’d gone to heaven. Incidentally, their web address is http://www.frecklesheaven.com – coincidence?

Was it tasty – yes or yes?

So in response to the question posted on their sign at the till – was it tasty, yes or yes? – Freckles gets a resounding YES from me! They’re open every day from 12:00 until 20:00 except for Tuesdays. BTW, the name comes from the many freckles that the cafés lovely owners, Nora and Anna, are blessed with^^
